Phosphorescent :: Athens Southern Warble

Presently touring the West coast (played L.A.’s Hotel Cafe’ last night) is Matthew Houck, aka Phosphorescent, out of Athens, GA. Imagine a younger Will Oldham and you’re on the right track. Houck & co. have a new album out on Misra Records, entitled Aw Come Aw Wry, further illustrating the Athens music scene is alive and doing very well. Read what CMJ said : “The songs of Phosphorescent leader Matthew Houck are steeped in the type of cacophonous glory that just can’t be forced or premeditated. As ethereal organs and jangly guitars rise to a peak accented by what we can only assume is the bashing of garbage cans, there’s something uniquely organic about the whole ordeal (the cans were just there, man). Having already made some significant achievements on a debut disc and EP, the latest from this young Georgian continues to cement his reputation as an incredibly talented and creative artist in Americana, and with Aw Come Aw Wry, he’ll undoubtedly be stumbling into more hearts and minds. Voicing his tales of woe, love and the like with a Southern warble, Houck is at ease performing with nothing but his acoustic guitar. But as he proved on past efforts, he’s also a composer of gorgeous triple-A symphonies, spicing up his tracks with haunting gothic choirs, crashes of homemade percussion and stripped-down horns. “-CMJ
