Detroit’s Deadstring Brother’s sound like they practice what they preach. As others have noted, Starving Winter Report reeks of Exile-era Stones. A strung-out, amped up, cross-breed of rock & roll, southern-fried boogie woogie, and hard country. You can almost see the Jagger-like snarl that must grace lead vocalist Kurt Marschke’s face as he belts out these numbers. The band is tapping a long rock & roll tradition most recently traversed (successfully) by The Black Crowes. Big shoes to fill, yes, but they’re off to a fine start. Look for the release of their debut in February of 2006.
