The past six months have found me listening to Castanets a lot at night. As great as Castanets are, I don’t know if they would exist (at least in the same manner) without Sixteen Horsepower. Folklore’s haunted soundscapes traverse the same rural noir that Raymond Raposa and crew explore and expand on throughout their Cathedral and First Light’s Freeze albums.
Horsepower’s David Eugene Edwards captures the dark moody atmosphere on Folklore that both attracts and frightens, not unlike Will Oldham at his best. Genre classic.
