Plastic Ono Band: A seething, frightened, angry glimpse into an artist’s pained soul. Arguably John’s best solo output, if completely misunderstood at the time of it’s release. Exorcising his demons as the tapes rolled — the analog offspring of the Primal Scream therapy he was undergoing at the time. Post-Beatlemania and post-divorce, John delivered the […]

M. Ward’s May 6, 2004 visit with KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic host Nic Harcourt. I was lucky enough to see Ward open up for My Morning Jacket later that weekend, at the Avalon in Hollywood, performing most of the songs below. The cover of Bowie’s “Let’s Dance” was the highlight of his opening set, […]

The Acrobat is it’s own little universe. A quiet, vulnerable place where it rains most of the time and the inhabitants rarely speak above a whisper. Coffee is served all day, and everyone tends to stay up late and think too much. Lights are used sparingly, and there is no such season […]

Notes: Traded with someone for this show about three years ago after seeing the Los Angeles date of this same run. Great solo “acoustic Ryan” show with excellent, sparse renditions of his post-Whiskeytown repertoire. Several songs feature cello, violin and/or background vocal accompaniment. New Album: Captain WIld Horse (Rides The Heart Of Tomorrow)

“The new album hits hard for such gentle music. Short wrings every drop of emotion from story-songs like “Goodbye Old Morning” and “Like Anything, It’s Small” and delivers lovesick meditations like “Pullin’ Pullin’” and “Wild Wild Horses” with almost painful tenderness. But she isn’t sure how […]

I am a big fan of most of Steve Earle’s material — the post-prison/post-addiction stuff in particular. While I do agree with some of the man’s politics, some of it does get a little heavy handed for my taste. That’s when a song like “I Thought You Should Know” comes in to save the day. […]

The music of Simon & Garfunkel has been with me for a long time. I first bought their greatest hits compilation in the sixth grade after overhearing it at a friend’s house while his mom listened as she did whatever it is mom’s do. I think it was the first “adult” music purchase I ever […]

Highway 61 Revisited Revisited
In September of 2005 Uncut magazine released a tribute CD covering Bob Dylan’s Highway 61 Revisited album. The pronounced Americana/roots-rock lineup does a fine job covering the iconic album each in their own unique way.

Thanks to Clever Titles for getting me a copy of this recent tour-only EP. Keeping with the theme of last year’s Morrissey covers EP, Meloy tackles the Shirley Collins cannon for this years cover fodder. All of these tracks have been floating around various sites the past two weeks, so if you missed any […]

Mofro’s debut album, Blackwater, was my favorite release of 2002. I loved it…still love it. Southern soul, funk, and front porch blues. A medley of influences spanning Stevie Wonder at his funkiest to Exile-era Stones. That Muscle Schoals sound is dripping all over this one.
