In 2006 the final volume of the American Recordings was released effectively closing the door on final chapter of Johnny Cash’s storied career. Looking back, 2000’s American III: Solitary Man album produced my favorite cover from the entirety of the series in Cash’s rendering of Will Oldham’s “I See A Darkness.” Staying true to the original (with Oldham supplying sparse backing vocals) Cash injects a new element of weariness to the already heavy song.
