Cash/ Will Oldham :: Under The Dark Covers

“Johnny Cash’s voice was so big, it made the world grow small… When I first heard ‘I Walk the Line’ so many years earlier, it sounded like a voice calling out ‘What are you doing there, boy?’ I was trying to keep my eyes wide opened, too.”Bob Dylan, Chronicles Vol. I

In 2006 the final volume of the American Recordings was released effectively closing the door on final chapter of Johnny Cash’s storied career. Looking back, 2000’s American III: Solitary Man album produced my favorite cover from the entirety of the series in Cash’s rendering of Will Oldham’s “I See A Darkness.” Staying true to the original (with Oldham supplying sparse backing vocals) Cash injects a new element of weariness to the already heavy song.
