Irish lilt mixed with the attitude of early UK punk rock was what initially powered the The Pogues. Fronted by the (in)famous Shane MacGowan, The Pogues lifted traditional Irish music out of the gutter of past injecting it with a strong dose of piss and lager.
Originally released in 1987 If I Should Fall from Grace With God was the band’s calling card and breakthrough to mainstream audiences anchored by the crossover Christmas ballad “Fairytale in New York” — a fine tune which I have posted, and will be posting again during the upcoming Holidays. MacGowan’s writing and the band are in top form here, swimming in cigarettes and Guinness. The reissue comes with a good share of bonus tracks sure to excite the MacGowan die hards.
