smr.jpgLong dismissed as an experiment gone awry, Their Satanic Majesties Request is the Stones album that, if given time (and an open mind), is as fascinating as it is flawed. Indeed, popular opinion has long skewered the band for aping the psychedelic sounds found on Pepper and other, ahem, “trippy” albums of it’s time, but that, in part, is what makes 1967’s Satanic Majesties such an interesting listen. For it is the Stones take on psychedelic experimentation, and as a massive Stones freak, that is pretty damn exciting in and of itself.

I love the album for what it is (and isn’t), and find the (listenable) outtakes an interesting window into the band’s studio process, not to mention rough sketches of tracks that would go on to see the light of day on future albums. Here are a couple from the sessions to chew on.

But wait, I can’t very well mention Their Satanic Majesties Request without acknowledging the Jonestown Massacre’s 1996 triumphant ode and tribute album, appropriately entitled, Their Satanic Majesties Second Request. Pastiche. Absolutely. Ridiculous? Actually, no, quite entertaining.

  1. Wow, Cosmic Christmas indeed. “Family” is awesome. Is that John Paul Jones on keyboards? Are there more of these tracks? Pray tell.

  2. r, yes, there are more tracks, but truthfully the sound quality on the majority of them is abysmal.

  3. Great post. I’ve been meaning to write about this record for some time actually. Truth be told, it’s my second favorite stones album (behind Let it Bleed) which I know is pure blasphemy to Stones fans, but hey, my taste runs to the more psych-friendly trippy stuff, and while they might be derivitive here, they are no less than awesome. Hell, I even like the Bill Wyman song on this record. I’ve always thought it was unfairly maligned. Glad to know someone else agrees.

  4. As always, unreleased or impossible-to-find music found here has sent me to the music store for more. I remember the old Reprise lost leaders, where you bought an album of songs for a buck, got a taste, then went out and bought the real thing. Your site shows the power that people who know the music and a couple of well-selected cuts can have on an audience. (Picks up soapbox and goes back to the ‘phones.) Thanks for the reminder.

  5. oh dear…… this really was the stones nadir of a record- 2000 light years from home?? i seem to remember was mr wymans unmitigated disaster. hangs head in shame !!!!!! i bought it !!!!!!!!!! — but your honour ,, i only played it once >. seriously , they didnt start doin anything at all for me again until yas yas came out . i couldnt even offload it at the local dealer it was that much of a turkey. once they got back in line tho ..n keef started t crank it again , oh yea verily, oh yeah

  6. Shoot! I got here too late and the mp3’s are gone. I hope you’ll share “Cosmic Christmas” again with us some time. I would love to hear it.

  7. dammit is it possible to find these recordings elsewhere or upload them again please?
