SXSW :: Bishop Allen (Thurs/Friday)

bishop-allen.jpgOne of the many bands I had been looking forward to seeing in Austin was Brooklyn’s uber-prolific Bishop Allen. As many of you music blog readers (have no doubt) read countless times over the course of the past year, the band self-released an EP every month of ’06. The material the EPs produced was surprisingly solid for the most part, and as of this year they have signed with the newly minted Dead Oceans label with an album set for release in a few months. The album will be the follow-up to Allen’s excellent debut Charm School.

We caught Bishop Allen twice during SXSW — Thursday night at the Secretly Canadian/Jagjaguar showcase, and Friday afternoon at the Hot Freaks party. Both shows showed the band (performing as a six piece) to be as great live as they are on record. Whenever asked to describe their sound, I mumble something to the effect of “like an aural equivalent to a Wes Anderson movie.” Pick up Charm School and you’ll get the gist.

Also: I sat in with Dodge and co-interviewed Bishop Allen’s Justin Rice after their Hot Freaks performance. You can catch that on MOKB’s upcoming Sirius show on Left of Center channel 26. Photo credit: You Ain’t No Picasso.
