will-oldham.jpgI’m not even going to begin to claim one version is “better” than the other. Hells no. I’ve had the Minutemen original locked in my brain for so many years that upon first hearing Will Oldham and Tortoise’s cover I was totally, and completely, caught off guard; both by their interpretation and how much I really liked it. I was left slackjawed.

Naturally, everything is amped up in typical Tortoise space-fuck style; a sound I can only imagine puts a grin on Mike Watt’s stubbled face. Oldham’s vocals are both convincing and, well, creepy. Perfect.

“i don’t want to hurt see my position was here i mean as it was, i was, so this lead to the downfall of man, i can make seconds feel hours, i make certain that my head is connected to my body, no hope? see, that’s what gives me guts, big fucking shit, right now, man.”

Aside: Per the Tortoise/Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy collaboration on The Brave and The Bold, I thought it was a total and complete success. In fact, it’s about all I listened to the month of it’s release. It’s evident no boundaries existed while reinterpreting other artist’s work.

  1. good call. i don’t know why their album was so poorly received – like you, i was glued to it for a long time. ‘thunder road’ especially.

  2. very trippy cover.. yeah i’m used to the original, so this is like …. wth, but then realized what they were doing with it. btw will looks kinda creepy in this pic

  3. Thunder Road is just sick. I thought there was no way I would like it before I listened to it, since I love the Boss version, but I ended up loving it.

I think the album is more duds than studs, and I love Bonnie, just not Tortoise so much.
