YES! DEATH PROOF! (so buying the soundtrack when i make it to my local record store!) i loved it. anyone who’s indecisive of seeing grindhouse needs to just go now. (i’m going tomorrow for another helping!)

it is utterly amazing. especially for the fake trailers, but death proof was my favorite. hands down.

Grindhouse was so awesome! when “Hold Tight” came on during that scene, I was grooving. “What is this song?” I wondered (Jungle Julia says the name, but come on, ‘Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich’ is a lot to remember). So, thanks a lot for saving me some trouble in figuring it out!

Had you already known of the track? I’ve never even heard of Dave Dee & company.

That new album is total crap.
They’ve become completely overproduced, built up over hype (Marr), and they’ll never be what they once were (Building Nothing Out of Something, This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About).
Brock’s voice sounds totally horrible, which started on that last horrendous album. Why doesn’t he sing anymore? I don’t want to hear that ugly barking noise that comes out of his mouth!
Ugly Casanova on the other hand, was an amazing album. So much depth to it.
Unfortunately, Modest Mouse, one of my all time favorite bands, has totally sunk.

I like it. I’ll probably get yelled at for saying this, but I heard traces of Lonesome Crowded West in it. At least in Spitting Venom. I think its good. As an album in its entirety it doesn’t hold up to Moon & Antarctica, but M&As gonna be hard to ever top…

And like Ugly Cassanova, I thought Brock revealed his unabashed love for Tom Waits in this new one here and there. I’m down with that. Gotta show the love.

I don’t see how anyone can say that the new album sounds like Ugly Casanova. Because it does not. It sounds like another overly produced Mouse album, though slightly better than Good News. The lyrics are boring. The production on Moon and Antarctica was perfect for Modest Mouse.

Funny, I listened to the new Modest Mouse yesterday. I’ve never been much of a fan…especially back when they started…I was never really feeling what they did…That being said, my partner absolutely adores Ugly Casanova, but doesn’t like MM.

The first thing I thought when listening to the new MM was “This sounds a lot like Ugly Casanova.” Granted, I haven’t heard it in a couple of years…but….I’m glad I read this post and I’m not alone. I can definitely deal with UC…I’m a huge Deck/Rutili fan. Holopaw too (could they be more slept on? I say no.)

I think I might actually put the new MM on the iPod and see what reaction she gives on our upcoming road trip

ah, the new modest mouse. at first listen i really liked it. but i have liked it less and less with each listen. its flat and uninspired. the lyrics arent as interesting as before, the music feels like we’ve heard it all a thousand times before…i just dont follow.

however, i loved that ugly casanova record. too bad the mm record deal said no more ugly casanova. id rather have another uc album than this mm album.

I feel that the Ugly Cassanova influence is largely felt on the new Modest Mouse album. Perhaps this is due to the collaborative nature of the song writing on both records. Particularly, listen to “Parting of the Sensory,” and see if you agree. To me, the new album stands up against anything Brock has been a part of in the past, and Marr’s influence is subtle and elegant (but noticeable by any student of The Smiths).

The new Modest Mouse is enjoyable. I’m no apologist, but I can see the good in things that might not neccesarily be great. It’s better than Good News I think. Marr doesn’t seem to show his prescence as much as say, Nels Cline is all over Wilco’s new album. Either way, it’s enjoyable.

But Ugly Casanova can’t be beaten. It’s one of my top ten albums of all time.
