Searching for Soul: Rare/Classic Soul, Funk & Jazz

searching-for-soul-lun-n-haight-records.jpgWhile its only been part of my collection the past six weeks, the Searching for Soul compilation, released a couple of years ago by the always on-point Luv ‘N Haight imprint, has left its mark. And not just on my CD player, but influencing what I am grabbing off the shelf when looking for something to throw on/revisit. Let’s just say the pad has been exceptionally funky of late. Don’t be surprised if this is reflected in an upcoming soul infused radio show.

Not unlike Stones Throw Records’ Now-Again imprint and Numero Group’s Eccentric Soul series, Luv ‘N Haight make the case that Detroit was far more than just the Motown sound when it cames to the genres of soul, r&b, funk and jazz back in the day.

Searching For Soul rounds up some flat out bangin’ collection of tracks, most covered in a thick layer of funk that give them an edge in sharp contrast to the Motown sheen that was being laid down across town.

Home Schooled: The ABCs of Kid Soul – the unknown side of the ’70s kid soul revolution…

Speaking of the Numero Group, I am very delinquent in my reporting of the label’s latest lost treasure trove: the early ’70s kid soul movement. Here, on their 16th release, the label tells, through the course of 17 tracks, what feels like an alternate history of The Jackson 5. Yeah, dig that, Joe Jackson.

  1. Sidetraxx Records and James Kirchstein bring you this great classic piece of the golden Midwest musical history.
Special thanks to Cuca Records for maintaining top quality master tapes of this 1972 recording.
James Kirchstein produced LP’s and singles from 1959 until the early 1970s. While the company’s bread and butter came from its vast catalog of polka and ethnic LP’s, Cuca also recorded pop, rock ‘n’ roll, rhythm & blues, folk, and traditional jazz, with an output of over 1000 45-rpm singles.
Because most of the artists were from Wisconsin or adjacent states, the Cuca recordings present a concentrated view of the area’s ethnic and popular music.

The original Soul artist from the New LP releaseHome Schooled: The ABC’s Of Kids Soul Track #17, is none other than Johnnie Gee.

Johnnie Gee has promoted his career for over 30 years and still has a strong presence among his fans. At age nine, Johnnie recorded his first single with Step By Step; by age 13 he was already earning his own living as an entertainer. After 37 years, Platinum Records, Brunswick Records, Cuca Records and Sidetraxx Records have brought back the classic early sounds of Step By Step and Johnnie Gee.

There wer several songs recorded by “Step By Step” and Johnnie Gee in 1972, visit http://www.myspace.com/johnniegee to get your hands on more un-heard songs recorded by Johnnie Gee, get a copy of these un-heard tracks today, and Johnnie Gee will personally autograph it for you..
