Emmylou Harris

Yes, browsing an issue of Fader magazine can often seem like one big hipster lifestyle advertisement, but, and this is a big but, they do often have some good content if you are willing to dig. This past issue (with Devendra Banhart on the cover) has a Q+A with one of my all-time favorite female vocalists; Ms. Emmylou Harris.

Fader: Most musicians, especially country musicians, have gone through low periods where they fell under the sway of a production fad, maybe, or made records almost automatically for a while. But I don’t get the sense, listening to your records, that that happened to you—why is that?

Emmylou Harris: I figure it’s just that, pretty much for the whole of my career, I had just enough success where I didn’t have to make any compromises. I sold just enough records. I had a loyal fan base. I’ve actually, for the most part, had record companies that kind of understood that I was on a different track, and that that should be respected…. I’ve been very, very lucky.
