The Beach Boys “Funky Pretty” is the full on jam. It’s funky, it’s pretty. It’s what I want in an early ’70s Beach Boys song. Released on the 1973 Holland LP, as well as the live album The Beach Boys in Concert from that same year, the track showcases the life of the band post-Wilson with vocal duties alternating between Carl Wilson, Al Jardine, Mike Love, and Blondie Chaplin.
Video: Taken from The Beach Boys 1976 Good Vibrations tour, along with interspliced footage from Brian Wilson’s birthday party. Oh yeah, be sure and play “spot the Beatle with a sweet mullett” during the party scenes….
This is one Joe’s Favorite records! One of Chris’ least favorites. If you ever wanna start a fight at band practice, bring up Holland. All in all I think it’s a great record.
Great vid. I absolutely adore Carl’s voice. One of the greatest singers of all time, imo.
Holland is one of their best late records. Ricky Fataar and Blondie Chaplin (The Flames) were excellent additions to the Beach Boys 70s lineup. Holland is worth it for this song as well as The Trader, Leaving This Town, and others; and not to mention the nutty little Magic Transistor Radio bonus story!! Thanks AD, so nice.
Great live version of Funky Pretty! I have to listen to In Concert again. Ricky & Blondie really made the other Boys step up and rock. Holland, Carl & the Passions, Surfs Up all have great songs & little forgettable stuff. The best era for the rest of the BB’s to show what they could do without Brian.
