Obviously some mixed emotions on this. Ike and Tina together made some of my favorite music of all time, yet the abuse he inflicted on her is enough to want to repress it altogether. People like Dylan or Lennon were certainly flawed as human beings, as spouses and parents as well, but in ways that can be forgiven. Not so with Ike, and it's nearly impossible to move past that and appreciate the music on its own.

Great job summarizing that dichotomy, better than most obits I've read on him, and certainly better than the NY Post:

That's not the original Rocket 88, but you have to admit that guitar solo does rock.

I can pretty much assure you that the version you posted of Rocket 88 is not the original Sun studios version. It sound slike a 70's or possibly even 1980's rehash with a much more grizzled Jackie on vocal...

where did you pull that from?

The Ike and Tina Revue cut is a different version of River Deep Mountain High than the one Phil Spector produced. This was done later on for Ike's own financial reasons, and does not feature the epic Spector studio touches...

Thanks for the post, sad to see him go as a musician, but not much of a loss as far as the humans aspect goes.

Is that the Spector-produced River Deep, Mountain High? It sounds slightly different for some reason--a fence of sound?

Sad to see him go. Popular music would certainly have taken a different shape without him. Certainly a shame that there was so much destruction in his personal life, but quite a talented fellow.
