Japancakes :: Loveless (My Bloody Valentine) 2007

Japancakes

The other night following the Drive-By Truckers show, here in LA, I had two things on my mind; 1st, how much fun, no matter how many times I’ve seen them, the Truckers are in a live setting, and 2nd, how after watching pedal steel wiz John Neff for two straight hours, how I wished I had thought to load Japancakes excellent 2007 interpretation of My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless album, onto my iPod. I did so immediately when I arrived home. If you’re an MBV fan and have yet to hear this, consider it essential listening, and make it a priority. No distortion, no gloss, no vocals, just the material itself, performed in its entirety, Japancakes style: lonesome, ambient, pedal steel, cello, piano, et. al.

For those keeping score, Japancakes released not one, but two LPs lat last year, their Loveless tribute, and the all original album Giving Machines. Both release via Darla records who have also re-released the Athens group’s back catalog. Get it DRM free at eMusic.

  1. On the original LP they do a great cover of the Cocteau Twins ‘ “Heaven or Las Vegas” also. They are such an amazing band. I remember one of the first times I saw the Truckers back when Earl Hicks was still their bass player, he was wearing a Japancakes t-shirt. I love linking my favorite music together.
