I just argued with a friend of mine about Morphine the other day. I saw them twice at a little run down bar in Birmingham, AL. I had the chance to meet the guys one night after the show. I don't think I have ever met nicer guys than Mark, Dana, or Jerome. That bass, especially live, took on an eerie quality, much like his voice.

Morphine was almost always like a well-kept secret for me. Over the course of my travels, it was always fun to bump into somebody who had a copy of Good or Cure for Pain in their CD stacks; this provided instant confirmation to me that they were on the level. One of my favorite concert memories was seeing them in the basement of the Middle East Cafe in Boston, probably in 95 or so. Incredible.

...and the name of the hotel...was the wagon wheel. Oh!

I was lucky enough to see them at Tramps in NYC in '96 - the place was packed. I miss the musical atmosphere of that pre-boy-band/manufactured-pop-diva era. The Bogmen were on Atlantic too (sigh).

As a Boston resident and a huge fan of the band - I have the great honor of having Morphine flashbacks every time I see a show in Cambridge, MA's Central Square - There (somewhat inconspicuously) is Mark Sandman square.... Just a few feet from where the man used to hang out with friends before climbing up on stage.

famethrowa: I have to agree and I wonder if our modern desert in radio isn't a backlash to the 90s openness? It has to be, given the amount of money that majors sunk into indie acts with the idea that they would be big money movers as opposed to long term investments. David Geffen had the right idea with hiring Sonic Youth (which, of course, netted him Nirvana), but he also knew to give them artistic leeway and I wouldn't doubt that in the long run it has netted them a profit. Think of how many bands got dumped when they didn't make big money and quickly.

And if you really want to know how open the 90s were, I have 5 words for you:

The Melvins were on Atlantic.

'nuff said.

I saw them at lallapalooza in Austin in the 90's, after having fallen in love with their records, and was simply blown away. Was I imaging things, or was the dude really playing two sax's at the same time???

Thanks for bringing this great band back into the light.

Gotta agree with the idea of the 90s being commercially 'open.' Folks can debate the relative impact of the music itself, but the fact that bands like morphine, portishead, Mike Watt, Dinosaur Jr, and on and on got major label backing (and airplay) is absolutely staggering to think of in today's bland pop format.
