kudos to the cassettes though! you've got it perfectly.

I really enjoyed the art of making a mix tape. I used to carefully list all the songs and artists, then add an appropriate illustration for the sleeve - if there was room. It taught me how to write really tiny.

I have a tattoo of the cassette artwork used on a Delgados single. A few months ago a kid asked me what it was! I explained that back in the old days before cds this was how people listened to music. Seriously, the kids mind was boggled.
All of my old radio shows are on cassette and tons of mix tapes plus a few cassette only releases. There's something about them that makes me feel fuzzy inside still. I like tape hiss!

So true. I wish I still had a Walkman that moved. I found an old cassette the other day that a friend made on the occasion of my moving from Norfolk, Va. to Louisville, Ky. My friend did my life on 45 minutes a side, starting with "Brave New World" by the Steve Miller Band, and after a few tunes, it really took off -- Jonathan Richman's "Roadrunner" for a few seconds, then the songs actually skips - vinyl! - into Elvis starting "The Promised Land," "I left my home in Norfolk, Virginia" for another second or two into someone, anyone?, shouting "Kentucky Woman, Kentucky Woman!" into "Find a city, Find myself a city to live in" ... Talking Heads. Got what a brilliant piece of work.
