I saw the National 3 months ago at my son's college , Hamilton, with about 200 people and also at the Mann Music Center in Philly a couple weeks ago Seate 13,000+/-). I thought both concerts were great, but to me the small venue was decidedly better. In the small venue I could feel the changes of intensity in each song more, while at the Mann it was a bit washed out. I still want to hear "90 Mile Water Wall" live though, where should I go for that? And I like the lyrics a lot, even this over 50 music lover can appreciate them.

I think that qualifying the band as singing about or to "the white, mid-20s/early-30s coastal hipster" places a fence around them. I do live on one of the coasts, but I am 39 and as (mercifully) far away from skinny panted hipster as they get. I do however think The National speak to a certain amount of stumbling early 21st Century, particularly North American perspective. For me its as if someone left something of my metaphorical menu AND I can't find the prices. Anyway, great interview, looking forward to seeing the film and thanks for posting all the great music.
