Good review. Quick correction, though - The line in "Slapped Actress" is "Some nights it's just entertainment and some other nights, it's work".

Excellent review, AD. My first few listens were pretty superficial, then I started listening to the lyrics. Whoa - heavy, dude. The legal themes that run through "Sequestered in Memphis" and "One for the Cutters" are definitely new territory for Mr Finn - like he's been reading Elmore Leonard novels on the tour bus. "One drop of blood on immaculate Keds", indeed.

Keep up the good work!

That's one of the finest reviews I've read in some time. "...when the neon lights flicker out." Nice work M.

Dead-on review. After allmusic's lazy and inaccurate (in terms of citing lyrics and which songs they belong to, among other things), this was just what I like to read.

I especially agree that "Navy Sheets" is a misstep, but I bet that on recall you can probably remember the synths. A bad Hold Steady song is still pretty good by most bands' standards (I'm not to hot for "Same Kooks" from Boys and Girls in America, either, but I still remember it pretty vividly). That said, I think "Lord I'm Discouraged" is their best slow song, and their adventurousness really pays off. My favorite album of the year, so far.

As a dude who obtained this CD as a promo at my job a month ago, I can say that this review is pretty dead on.

The one thing I agree most with is to say that Navy Sheets is a misstep - however, the breakdown in that song where Finn belts out the following stanza of:

"Sunday morning, sidewalks splattered
Feverish in stylish tatters
Didn't this used to seem like glamour
I remember when it mattered
Can't get over what's transpired
Left home virgins, came back vampires
Belt it out like backstretched choirs
We're either dead or really tired"

It really works for me... Over all the record reminds me that I'm getting older, though. But not in a bad way, more like in a whistful and sweet but bittersweet way. Refusing to give up my personality, but noticing that I'm not the target demo anymore... shit, I'm 25 - does this record really do this to people? nice.

Good dice.
