Ah, favorite Matthew Sweet tunes...let's see...here's my top 10:

I've Been Waiting
Girlfriend
Someone To Pull The Trigger [Live]
Ultrasuede
Behind The Smile
Sick of Myself
Not When I Need It
Get Older
The Ocean In-Between
I Love You

PS: Recently heard the Earth album for the first time and I gotta say, aside from the '80s production--which isn't that overbearing--I really liked it. The quality songwriting was already there early on.

Cheers!

My favorite Matthew Sweet song these days is/are the two versions of "Ugly Truth" from Altered Beast. I loved "Ugly Truth Rock" from back in the day with MTv and "120 minutes" but when I bought the CD (for 95 cents at Cheapo Discs in St. Paul) I discovered the acoustic version of "Ugly Truth" with soaring violins, layered guitars and poignant vocals.

I lived in Athens from 1983 to 1990 and I remember when Matthew was in town with Oh OK, etc. Girlfriend is an all-time classic, right down to the Tuesday Weld cover.

Thank you for this great great post.

"Time Capsule", "Untitled" also "Dark Secret" off "The Craft" Soundtrack is quirky fun and worth finding. Entire "Girlfriend" remains a top favorite with "Thought I Knew You" being my #1.

PNK - "Smog Moon" is a favorite of mine as well, and if you haven't snagged the Legacy Edition of Girlfriend, there is an acoustic studio version of "Winona" on the second disc that is just fantastic.

And thank you, travis. I thought about working that in, but was worried this was long enough as was.

The lush remix of "Devil with the Green Eyes" from the Son of Altered Beast EP is a track I never get sick of hearing. Other faves: "Smog Moon" (100% Fun), "Winona" and "You Don't Love Me" (Girlfriend). Many more, too, but those are standouts for me. Totally inspiring.

Matthew Sweet is a fine, underappreciated songwriter. I like "Evergreen", and in fact have told people I want it played at my funeral. That and bagpipes. Also, the entire first side of the Girlfriend album is great.
