Saw them 2wice in Boston in the 80's early, 90's. Fun, energetic, great live show (TT the bears, maybe 50 people). Much more innovative that given credit for- the MBV comparisons put them 'in a box' that some folks weren't interested in opening up. The remix EP, BrokeDick Car, was ahead of it's time too- in terms of interpreting one's own work, simutaneously (similar to Beasties, Beck, etc.).

Very underappreciated.

Two great posts on late '80s groups. I'll always associate Swirlies music with what was happening in the DC area - Slumberland Records was putting out great artists - like Velocity Girl - as was Teen Beat. My sister went off to grad school there, and on a couple of visits "out East", I was able to discover some great music.

Keep digging up these hidden gems!

How did I miss these guys? I always loved My y Valentine. After listening to Vigilant Always, I think I might like the Swirlies even more.

I got into Swirlies completely by accident - an old t-shirt I got for free of theirs - and have been utterly mesmerized by their work since then. They were a really remarkable band and I think this album stands up with the best of 90s American rock.
