ptmm is one of my faves, too. It occurs to me that if I had to name the heyday I'd say - let it be, tim, pleased to meet me - which kinda shatters the twintone/sire division.
One of my favorite live moments came at a show in Portland during the dtas tour with one of my least favorite tunes on record - We'll Inherit the Earth. Amazing....

thanks again for the great post (and blog). There's always great old stuff that pops up as well as all the new stuff to give this old fart a chance to see what's going on

I certainly wouldn't list Tim as their worst. By 'worst-recorded' I meant that I disliked the production on it the most of any of their albums. Songwise, it's at the top, no questions.

I've always tended to gravitate towards these albums over the Twin/Tone ones, Matt. PTMM especially is the one I come back to over and over again. And I also agree - as I mentioned in the post, the live versions of the songs on ASD put the entire record to shame and sound just ridiculously good. Same with DTAS.

Waj,
Good point on the dtsa production. Another reason I think I like asd is that there's a tone of resignation to the tunes that rings very true to me and makes for an honest last record.

yay to matt, absolutely jaw.dropping live, (in both senses, depending on the night)...
always thought the songs of DTAS w/production of ASD would have been interesting...
speaking of the later stuff reminds me of the soft spot i have for Chris Mars solo records...

ditto on the unabashedness of all this so I'd be the last to be too harsh on anyone's preferences. Though I do scratch my head a bit when some (not in this thread) are so militantly anti sire-era mats. And further to the comments on production values let's not forget westerberg's unabashed love of the raspberries and other bubblegum and am goldish pop.
And as great as the best songs are from any record (johnny's gonna die, if only you were lonely, color me impressed, within your reach, unsatisfied, seen your video, sixteen blue..........just to get a list started), I was often knocked out by a live rendition of some of my least favorites. Any number of Replacements shows still rank at the top of my favorite shows period.

I understand you were trying to offer a critical take on the albums, and like you I am an unabashed 'Mats fan. But I still can't believe that Tim could be considered one of their worst albums. Certainly, the album has filler tracks, but it also has some of my fav 'Mats songs of all time, specifically Swingin' Party, Left of the Dial, and Bastards of Young.

I'll go ahead and say that I realize that I'm (I think) in the minority when it comes to preferring DTaS to ASD. To each their own and obviously, I'm an unabashed 'Mats fan who loves everything they ever did.

I also got a note from someone about this post that lept to the defense of Tim. Let me clarify, if this review sounds harsher than most regarding the 'Mats, that I wanted to take as critical a look at these albums as possible, being that I am so often blinded by my sheer love for the band. I thought fellow hardcore fans might enjoy a more critical read of these canonical texts and anyone who isn't already converted, well..go out and buy all of these now. Period.

Thank you so much for this post and the ones that preceded it. I agree with nearly every word, but I just wanted to say that All Shook Down is a superb album and stands right next to anything post Tim.

ps. Now that I've read Travis' take, he's on to something when he basically says that the production values were a sign of the times. The eighties certainly saw an explosion of new digital studio processing devices whose overuse had basically run it's course by the early nineties. I certainly overused these tools as a home studio and live sound engineer, but eventually learned to just get the fuck out of the way of the music.
Thanks again

Thanks for the write up. Spot on I'd say though I'm a bigger fan of All Shook Down. To me the production values are a lot drier and less processed with a much more intimate delivery of Westerberg's vocals. Maybe not the overall best set of tunes but I've thrown it on more frequently over the years than Don't Tell a Soul.
