They may be a small band, but Helvetia made a brilliant album in “Acrobats”, and it was very good. Very very good. If one could encapsulate a summer breeze into a sound, it would be this album.

Great list, many of these records have a beautiful sound. Glad to see Portishead getting some love, to be honest I could never digest it in its entirety. It feels very claustrophobic to me, but played on the right moment this record is flawless.

@ David — I didn’t hear the ‘59 Sound till it appeared on Josh’s list for the best tracks of the year. I plan on giving it a great deal of time in 09.

@ Chris — Speaking only for myself, I think Dear Science is a brilliant record, but I didn’t listen to it much after late September. As great as it is, it’s still not one of my favorites of the year.

As much as I enjoyed many of the albums on this list, The Gaslight Anthem’s “The ‘59 Sound” was the one album from 2008 that blew me away. Passionate, catchy, and anthematic in the best possible ways.
