The most memorable DBT version of this tune came at Athfest a couple summers ago, when they played on Washington Street at about 5 p.m. on Sunday. At the end, Patterson went off, repeatedly screaming, "THEY FUCKIN' DIED!! THEY FUCKIN' DIED!! THEY FUCKIN' DIED!!!" to a huge crowd, that included a bunch of families, kids, and other folks who've most likely never seen anything quite like that.

If you haven't made it to Athfest yet, don't miss it this summer.

Jim Carroll is essentially the Hold Steady's spiritual grandfather= Songs about screwed up kids, check. Drugs? Check. Overarching Catholicism? Check. Spoken word/singing style? Check. Big riffs? Check.

Absolutely not a diss, but I can see why Patterson Hood probably dug the Hold Steady the moment he heard them.

Is Alabama Ass Whuppin' out of print? That is a shame. I have a copy that I bought when it came out from Wuxtry.

I'm old.

Absolutely spot-on, j. So many nights they blew the roof off the Star Bar with this. I think "Don't Be In Love Around Me" was often close behind. But those memories are hazy, at best. Good times.

I was lucky enough to find a used copy of Alabama Ass Whuppin' for $10 a couple of years ago and it does contain a great version of this tune (and "The Living Bubba"). And they always kill it live.

Ah, Jim Carroll. The Basketball Diaries, bought as a mass-market paperback in a card store changed my life.

I remember seeing The Jim Carroll Band c. 1983 at my college rec room on Long Island (couldn't call it a bar after the drinking laws changed to 21). Me and about 10 other students ... good times, good times.
