Am Central is just a great, great album. I found my way to Son Volt by way of Wilco and Uncle Tupelo. American Central seems to put together the elements that I liked from all three bands better than any single prior work. With recent Wilco and SV albums, it was sort of "good song, forgettable song, good song...", at least for me. This, however is an album where I never find myself hitting the 'advance' button in the car or at home, though I find myself hitting the Replay more than occasionally. As a diehard Keith Richards fan (drunken, wasted genius that he is), Cocaine and Ashes will end up overplayed to death in my collection. Sorry this sounds like a paid ad, but: just my two cents' worth. Thanks, Jay & Co.

I think this is easily the best album put out by Son Volt 2.0 and I think it even rivals some of the first albums as well. We'll see if it holds up over time the way those first three have for me, but it's a really good record and I think long time fans and new converts alike will enjoy it.

Just got this record - really enjoying it. It's got a really good and authentic sun volt vibe without trying to change that for the sake of being "popular" (something I think a few of his previous tracks/records did)... needless to say - great interview.

Good interview. As big of a fan of Jay's as I am, I might be a bigger fan of Chris Masterson's. He seems to put his stamp on every recording or concert he performs on, even when working with a great like Fararr.

Thanks for this...I've always been a big fan of Farrar. He has a certain authenticity that just doesn't come around often enough.

From the songs I have heard, "oppressive" may have been a bit of a reach, though I understand your point. "Meditative" maybe?

[...] Aquarium Drunkard: The new record seems like it’s a combination of everything within Son Volt, all the way back to Trace [the band's 1995 debut] - it seems like something that spans the 13 or 14 years of the band. [...]
