Nice summary. I was familiar with the Hughes soundtracks long before I ever bothered to see any of his films. They left a much bigger impression than the movies, too. Ialways found the high school stuff way overrated (Weird Science excepted).

It’s a good thing “Savage” Steve Holland’s films didn’t have soundtracks of such high quality. It would make his eventual passing simply devastating.

Well said, sir. As cheesey and cliched as it sounds now to say it, those movies and the music from those movies, meant a great deal to me as a teen in the 80′s. He nailed the high school experience for a lot of us.

Terrific writing guys. There is real sense of catharsis when you watch those movies as an adolescent, even if they tend move in a territory of conventions and stereotypes. But isn’t high school about stereotypes, anyway?Or maybe Hughes contributed to that whole teen tribal mythology? RIP regardless…
