I nearly wandered past this post. Best era for Prince in my opinion, it was impossible to watch MTV in `87 with at least not seeing one Prince video every half hour.

Nice post, but you forgot one important thing: Sign o the Times is Prince first trip to the jazz universe (there's some rumours that Mile Davis did the horns on "Adore").

Peace, love your blog.

I definitely agree with the line about "I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man". That song is so great, and in my view is the actual anchor of that album.

despite the musical dexterity yet image-jarring PR appearances, what i find interesting about all of Prince's works is that he's able to express his view of the social climate but still remain positive in his outlook. he's hardly a topical writer, but i think that's what keeps him 'safe' from being viewed as political.

Love this album
Which I consider bittersweat because of the break up of the original Revolution
The thing that gets missed about this album
is that even though it's lauded as a 'Prince' album
Most of the material is from the shelved Prince & the Revolution album:the Dream Factory and SOTT Prince wanted as a 3 disc set called the Crystal Ball(again a large portion of the songs from Dream Factory)
and some of the other were written with/Susannah Melvoin before they completely broke up

Slow Love & It's Gonna Be a Beautiful Night are are 2 non-Dream Factory cuts with the Revolution or Wendy & Lisa

Bitter sweet album but really exciting era in Prince history

[...] Aquarium Drunkard takes the time to revisit Sign O’ The Times, the amazing 1987 album by Prince. I agree that this was a high point for the little purple guy, the point at which he still had plenty of new, exciting ideas and the freedom and confidence to express them. Prince could probably write a standard party jam during an elevator ride (and that may be what he’s been doing for the last couple of decades) but this album is solid, varied and interesting.
