@Hugo - I'm a big Verbena fan, too, but I've interviewed Bondy twice in the past two years and every time I ask him about connections his solo music has to Verbena - I'm convinced that a lot of the sound of his current music is buried in the later Verbena music, especially the very underrated La Musica Negra - he shrugs it off and kind of dances around the question. He also told me a story (not included in the interview here) about a fan who was harassing him about playing Verbena songs on his solo tour and he made a comment about not even knowing those songs, really. My guess is that he doesn't have a lot of fond memories of his Verbena days for whatever reason and he just prefers to be moving on with his life. A shame, but understandable.

I wish AD had asked him about Verbena. I know that Bondy probably doesn't want to deal with those questions, but they should be expected.

Also, I loved Verbena's EPs, it's full length debut, and their major label debut. But just before they went on tour behind Into The Pink, Anne Marie Griffin left and it was all one big mystery.

So does anyone know the inside scoop about what happened there? I think having the female vocals really put Verbena over the top, but once she was gone, the songs were still good but were missing something. It's so sad that Verbena may never see the light of day, but I'm hopeful. Bring back Anne Marie!!!

He's on tour right now - I'll be seeing him here in North Carolina next week. I'm sure he'll make his way out west - he's doing a Europe stint with the Felice Brothers in October and another run through the South and Midwest in November. Hopefully after that. He's fantastic live.
