@marty Agreed. “Strangulation” and “Phone Went West” are epic one-of-a-kind songs. The latter was my introduction to MMJ at Bonnaroo in ‘03—when James looked like Cousin It with his hair either covering his face or synced with his head banging. Classic, indeed.

Thanks for this! Another great review of another GREAT MMJ album. Matt D’s comment about playing this outdoors in a beautiful setting is spot on! But be careful, you may just not be able to handle it!

It Still Moves was my first born and Z is the kid I love to party with, but when I die, I want At Dawn to be by my side.

@Andrew It Still Moves, easily. That and this are their best two records (in my opinion). Check out Marty's Decade post about that one. Can't go wrong with these two, and It Still Moves is also MMJ's follow-up to At Dawn, so a logical place to go next anyway.

Ahh yes, At Dawn – most definately my most beloved lp of the 00s and beyond.

I always valued lyrics so much in music – like they were 50% of the song – but with MMJ and this album particularly, I realised Jim could be singing about anything in any of the songs and it didn’t really matter to me – it was the sound that got me.

Whenever I find myself sitting in a big beautiful open space, for whatever reason I gotta play “I Needed it Most”. That song always gives me chills, but play it somewhere like Monument Valley – oh man.

One of my top three albums of my “decade.” Next to the self-titled Constantines record and You Forgot It In People. High praise for me.

I can still remember being absolutely floored when I heard JJ’s voice for the first time with the title track. Such an amazing opening song, and album.
