So glad to see DBT's finally mentioned in a decade top ten. Very difficult to choose this or Decoration Day, but I probably would chose Dirty South as well.

There is a review of the Drive-By Truckers CD, “The Fine Print,” which is a collection of oddities and rarities, on the Country Standard Time website: www.countrystandardtime.com

@ the author --- I'm a big dbt fan and for me this is not only their most accessible album, but probably their strongest front-to-back. Personally, I think you either love Patterson or you hate Patterson. I enjoy his songs within the context of the band, but dislike both his solo albums. My wife loves Jason (esp. his solo records) and Cooley, but is still turned off by Patterson's songs.

If you have the chance, rethink Buford in the way it was tracked for the vinyl release. Side 3 is: Boys from Alabama, Cottonseed, Buford and Daddy's Cup. For me, I've felt like those first three songs tell a story within the larger story of the Dirty South -- even Cottonseed fits into the narrative of the ramifications of being part of an outlaw gang. Conceptually it would've been more fitting, in my mind, to switch Daddy's Cup with Never Gonna Change to complete that narrative but it would've made Side 4 very lopsided (which is pretty killer). For me those three songs speak to a specific time in North Alabama history whereas the remainder of the album is more era-neutral (minus People on the Moon obv).

@Justin - To be honest, I think the stretch of three Pusser related songs is the only hitch in the album. If it wasn't for Cooley's "Cottonseed" wedged between Hood's two, it might have killed the momentum the record builds. That said, "The Boys from Alabama" is a great song and it's really only "The Buford Stick" that is a bit of a let down. But you know, in re-visiting the record for this review, I found even it growing on me by the end.

It was so hard to choose between Cooley songs for the upload. You'll notice we uploaded one song by each of the writers. Cooley's 4 are just so uniformly strong that it's astounding. "Daddy's Cup" never gets old, no matter how man times I listen to it.

Two songs about Buford Pusser is one too many for me but it's made up for by the pummeling "Lookout Mountain." This album was my first introduction to the band and remains a high point along with Decoration Day (though Brighter Than Creation's Dark is pretty damn good too).
