Personally, I think you either love Patterson or you hate Patterson. I enjoy his songs within the context of the band, but dislike both his solo albums. My wife loves Jason (esp. his solo records) and Cooley, but is still turned off by Patterson's songs. If you have the chance, rethink Buford in the way it was tracked for the vinyl release. Side 3 is: Boys from Alabama, Cottonseed, Buford and Daddy's Cup. For me, I've felt like those first three songs tell a story within the larger story of the Dirty South -- even Cottonseed fits into the narrative of the ramifications of being part of an outlaw gang. Conceptually it would've been more fitting, in my mind, to switch Daddy's Cup with Never Gonna Change to complete that narrative but it would've made Side 4 very lopsided (which is pretty killer). If it wasn't for Cooley's "Cottonseed" wedged between Hood's two, it might have killed the momentum the record builds. But you know, in re-visiting the record for this review, I found even it growing on me by the end. It was so hard to choose between Cooley songs for the upload. This album was my first introduction to the band and remains a high point along with Decoration Day (though Brighter Than Creation's Dark is pretty damn good too).
