Being a native Michigander, i have a sweet spot for this record. i know the urgency in Detroit lift up your weary head, remember the tulips in Holland- the record is a love letter, critical assessment, and a history lesson- stunning ambition especially when it is focused so sublimely on one subject- Michigan.

Seven Swans is his tightest (and most digestible record) but in my biased opinion, Michigan belongs among the finest double albums ever released.

Quite glad that someone else agrees that Michigan was far superior (pun intended?) to Illinoise.

Here's a recently published essay I wrote about Sufjan's trials post-Michigan in the postmodern era (shameless plug, I know...sorry):

I agree AJ. This series has netted me the incredible Noahjohn album reviewed a few weeks back (and the best part is that I found it for less than 3 dollars on Amazon). Aquariumdrunkard is the best site on the web, and I totally agree with your suggestion on a feature for the past few decades.

If it makes sense, I always say the first 40 minutes of "Illinois" is my favorite Sufjan music, but "Michigan" is a better album experience. He's trying to do less with "Michigan," and it makes a more cohesive statement. Also, I think "Vito's Ordination Song" is one of the stronger closing tracks of the decade. Great write up.

By the way, I'm really enjoying this decade series. It gives me an excuse to check out stuff that I may have missed from earlier in the decade, or stuff that I haven't listened to in a while. This year I followed Infinite Summer, which was an online reading group that read David Foster Wallace's "Infinite Jest," and it was one of the best reading experiences I've had. This has reminded somewhat of that, almost an online Record Club. It'd be great if it could continue in some fashion in the new decade. Perhaps a similar feature on the 60's, 70's, 80's, and 90's? Anyways, keep up the good work.

75% of this album cover is actually the state of Wisconsin, and most of Michigan is cut off. Still, it's a great album.

Michigan is great, but there was always something about Seven Swans that resonated with me more than his other works.
