@ Dubs — Funny you say that. For a while, I was beginning to wonder if I was the only one who liked BAGIA better than SS. More than a few people named SS one of the best of the decade, including eMusic, who called it the number two record of the decade. As far as opinion within the Unified Scene, it seems to me that preference is equally split among the two albums. Worry not! You’re not alone!

Great write up, and great album, but am I the only one who likes Separation Sunday better? I didn’t at first (I think because Stuck Between Stations is such an amazing piece that it blew my mind away), but after hundreds of listens to both, I think that SS tells a better overall picture and in general is just a fantastic album. Probably only behind YHF for me as albums of the decade go.

that’s throwing down the gauntlet. Love Wilco and Radiohead but they can’t bring it like the Hold Steady.

It’s so funny you put this up now. Yesterday I was driving with my cousin who never listened to the Hold Steady before. I popped this in the cd player, and he couldn’t even make it to “Chips Ahoy”. Not because he didn’t like it, but because he’d start “Stuck Between Stations” over as soon as it ended.

Love the reference to their twangy kindred spirits, The Drive-by Truckers, in the last paragraph. Rock and roll means well indeed. And I love this band…
