Arranged and produced by Jack Nitzsche, her husband, Buffy Sainte-Marie’s version of Neil Young’s oft-covered “Helpless” still ranks as a favorite. I’ve been putting together a streamlined collection of Nitzsche affiliated production work over the past few months and just recently re-discovered Marie’s take. Like all great covers, it cuts to the essence.
