I hadn’t heard this in years. Pulled out a hard drive today in order send this track to a friend as we had just been discussing Gillian Welch’s Soul Journey LP from 2003. The following cover of “Revelator,” off Welch’s album of the same name, has a Crazyhorse feel with Ryan Adams leading the charge backed by David Rawlings and Welch during the sessions that would ultimately yield Adams’ solo debut, Heartbreaker.

1 | theMike July 23rd, 2010 at 1:46 amI used to be obsessed with this song. But the version that got me hooked, and that makes all others pale in comparison:

It’s just smokier and more soulfull. WIth a better mix of Gillian and Ryan’s vocals. Although I do like the guitar on the Destroyer version.
2 | Amighty July 23rd, 2010 at 6:34 amsolid gold.
3 | hls July 23rd, 2010 at 6:53 ameverything ryan adams and gillian welch collaborated on back then was like pennies from heaven.

5 | brentabousko July 23rd, 2010 at 10:17 amAmighty, Thanks for that Exit/In version. I’d be much obliged if you’d share the entire show.
Ad, thanks for the Destroyer version. That’s one Ryan demo that I don’t have but now wish that i did.
6 | Doug C July 23rd, 2010 at 11:40 amMore Ryan Adams with David Rawlings and Gillian Welch. Pure brilliance. Thank you for reminding me of that.

7 | Eric July 23rd, 2010 at 12:24 pmMore great stuff from Ryan Adams. LOVE the wah guitar!
8 | Belle Boussole July 23rd, 2010 at 12:36 pmI might be in the minority here, but I’ll take Gillian’s album cut of this track — just a stark, intricate, beautiful, little journey. They’re all great, but that one’s just performed on another level. The two Ryan Adams versions sounds like something from a Noel Gallagher solo performance, which (again, probably in the minority) is a high compliment.
9 | FrankieLee July 24th, 2010 at 11:14 am@frankie, no, I like the original the most as well too if forced to pick and choose
10 | Satisfied '75 July 24th, 2010 at 11:37 amFrankie, I definitely agree with you. That whole album, Time (The Revelator) is simply amazing. This is a great version, but the album version is just breathtaking. Gillian and Dave are magic.
That whole Exit/In show is so good; one of my favorite Ryan solo shows. It’s available at the archive: http://www.archive.org/details/ryanadams1999-10-28.sbd.flac16
11 | Travis July 24th, 2010 at 3:24 pmFuckinoutasight!
12 | ian bevington July 24th, 2010 at 5:16 pmIf “New York” doesn’t take off, he might have made several albums with this sound.
13 | scott July 25th, 2010 at 1:57 amWow…it may not trump the Gillian version, but it works for me. And thanks to Eric and Travis for the additional goodness.
14 | Nathan Wade July 25th, 2010 at 2:28 pmHere’s to hoping this Metal thing is just a phase.
15 | Scott W. July 26th, 2010 at 7:33 pm@scott – I think RA is too interested in doing too many things to have ever made several albums in one vein.
@Scott W. – He’ll probably have two/three new “non-metal” albums out before the end of the year, so there’s that.
