In 2013 Light In The Attic Records is set to reissue four of Marcos Valle‘s 70s studio albums; now available for the first time in North America. Complimented by legendary Brazilian backing band Som Imaginário, the records span the realms of samba, bossa nova, and baião (rhythmic beat from the rural northeast of Brazil), to American soul, r&b and rock & roll. Extensive liner notes via Wax Poetics’ Allen Thayer detail both the contents and atmosphere in which the records were created, though the real catch here is having clean copies of Valle’s prime output at the ready.
A stylistic outlier on the self-titled 1970 debut, “Dez Leis” also happens to be my favorite cut of the set. As the track rolls along, imagine Dr. John doing this, circa the Gris Gris / Sun Moon & Herbs era, all dressed up in requisite hoodoo.
